It seems strange that we hear so much from the music industry about the negative effect the Internet can have on their business, but little is heard from the book publishing industry.  Despite the limited public rhetoric, a myth exists that one can get books from the Internet; taken to the extreme, some take this myth to mean that schools can close libraries and simply use the Internet.

So, the task is to test the myth that one can read books on the Internet.  The suggested steps are:

1) Visit some web sites that link to online books.

2) Explore the collections at the sites and browse the books enough so that you can decide:

  • if the collection would be useful for your book needs;
  • if you can read and understand the text as well as you can read and understand a printed book.

3) Create a PowerPoint presentation to summarize your work and conclusion.

The book sites listed to the right link to sites that provide books for free.  Some fee-based book sites are available; perhaps you can find and try some of those as well.
