Become Independent

Teachers who decide to begin using Computers as Mindtools are encouraged  to follow these guidelines for becoming independent:

1) Start small and start successful

When first using Computers as Mindtools, find a project that is within your capabilities and that is sure to succeed.  The adage "success breeds success" applies quite well to using Computers as Mindtools.

2) Try out the activity before you start with kids.

This is an attempt to find potential problems with the lesson... see rule to for a continuation of this thread of thinking.

3) Accept that things may go wrong.

Be honest with students before attempting something new.  Students typically respond well to teachers with malfunctioning computers if the lesson is prefaced with an announcement similar to this: "We are trying something new today... let's all see how this goes, and be patient if things go wrong."  Also, minimize anticipation among students; avoid building excitement for a technology-based lesson (especially the first time you try it) to minimize disappointment if things do go wrong.
