Working with Graphics

PowerPoint is programmed to allow users to insert, edit, and display a range of graphics, each is initially added to a slide by selecting the type of graphic to insert from the picture submenu under the insert menu.

The three most used pictures are :

1) Clip Art-- Clicking "Clip Art in the Picture Submenu will open the Insert Clip Art task pane, which allows users to enter a search terms and to select among media types (e.g. clip art, movies, sound).  Through this task pane, users can search both clip art collections saved on the hard drive and clip art collections maintained by Microsoft on the web.  Images in the  clip art gallery can be inserted into PowerPoint presentations using a submenu; see this image.

2) From File-- Users who have images saved on their system and wish to insert those images into PowerPoint presentations can click "From File" in the Picture Submenu.  This will open a familiar dialogue box that allows users to find the image on their system and insert the image.

3) WordArt-- Users can create pictures from text to use as banners, titles, or other effects.  Clicking the Clip Art command opens the Word Art Gallery, once the user selects the style of the WordArt, and clicks OK, the Edit WordArt Text dialogue box appears, so the user can key in and then format the text.

Once an image is inserted into a presentation, it can be edited.  There are a number of methods for opening the controls used to edit images:

1) Image Properties Dialogue Box-- Double-clicking an image opens a dialogue box with several tabs.  By adjusting the controls in that dialogue box, the size, position, and some color properties of the image can be adjusted.

2) Picture Toolbar-- PowerPoint includes a toolbar with controls specific for editing images; to view the Picture Toolbar click  View menu - Toolbars - Picture.  The Toolbars Menu items are toggle items, if Picture has a check next to it, then it will appear when an image is selected, if there is no check then it will not appear when an image is selected.  Clicking an item in the Toolbar Menu will change its state (from off to on or from on to off).  The Picture Toobar is shown here.
