Some steps adults can take to be proactive:
  • Encourage positive interactions with peers & positive digital work
  • Talk about the risks
  • Talk about the rules you find on web sites
  • Let your kids know you are aware
  • Get your own account on your kids' IM systems... add them to your "buddy list"
  • Keep your kids offline when they are angry at friends
  • Check your kids' sites
  • Set up accounts together... you get to know the password then!
  • Encourage kids to police their own sites... pull inappropriate content posted by friends
  • Learn to use whatever controls are provided by online communities (e.g. censoring & controlling who posts)
  • Remind kids that content can be permanant... downloaded images can reappear anytime!
  • Let kids know that college admissions offices and employers frequently "google" applicants
